Our AC Installation Process | What to Expect Step by Step
Getting a new AC system installed is a major investment in your home's comfort, and you deserve to know exactly what happens at every stage. At Varsity Zone HVAC, we've refined our installation process over thousands of jobs across the North Texas area. Here's what to expect from your first phone call through your first cool night in your newly air-conditioned home.
Step 1: Schedule Your Free Consultation
Everything starts with a phone call. When you reach out, we'll ask a few basic questions about your home — square footage, current system age, any comfort issues you're experiencing — and schedule an in-home consultation at a time that works for you. This visit is free, takes about 60-90 minutes, and comes with zero obligation or pressure.
Step 2: In-Home Assessment & Load Calculation
Our certified technician visits your home and performs a comprehensive assessment. This includes inspecting your current AC system and its condition, evaluating your existing ductwork for proper sizing and air leaks, measuring your home's square footage and noting insulation quality, window placement, ceiling heights, and sun exposure, and performing a Manual J load calculation — the industry-standard method for determining exactly how much cooling capacity your home needs.
This step is critical. An oversized system cycles too frequently, wastes energy, and fails to properly dehumidify your home. An undersized system runs constantly and can't keep up on the hottest days. Proper sizing means perfect comfort and maximum efficiency.
Step 3: Equipment Selection & Transparent Quote
Based on your load calculation, comfort preferences, and budget, we present equipment options from our partner brands: Trane, Carrier, Goodman, and Amana. We explain the differences in efficiency ratings, features, noise levels, and warranty coverage so you can make an informed choice. You'll receive a written, itemized quote that covers everything — equipment, labor, materials, permits, disposal, and warranty. No hidden fees.
Step 4: Installation Day
On your scheduled installation day, our team arrives on time (you'll receive an on-the-way notification) with all equipment and materials. Here's what happens:
- Protection: We lay down drop cloths and protective coverings to keep your home clean throughout the installation.
- Old system removal: We carefully disconnect and remove your existing AC equipment, including proper recovery of any remaining refrigerant per EPA regulations.
- New system installation: We mount the outdoor condenser unit on a level pad, install the indoor evaporator coil, connect refrigerant lines with proper brazing and leak testing, make all electrical connections to code, and connect to your existing ductwork (with modifications if needed).
- Refrigerant charge: We charge your system to the exact manufacturer specifications using calibrated gauges — not guesswork.
Most standard installations are completed in one full day (6-8 hours). If your project requires ductwork modifications or other additional work, we'll discuss the timeline in advance.
Step 5: Testing & Commissioning
Before we consider the job complete, we run a full battery of tests. We verify airflow at every supply register in your home, check refrigerant pressures against manufacturer specifications, test electrical connections and safety controls, measure temperature differential across the evaporator coil (you should see 15-20°F between return and supply air), and verify the condensate drain is flowing properly. We don't leave until everything checks out.
Step 6: Walkthrough & Warranty Registration
We walk you through your new system — how to operate your thermostat, when to change your filter (we recommend every 60-90 days in North Texas due to dust and pollen), what normal operation sounds like, and how to reach us if you ever have questions. We register your manufacturer warranty on the spot so your coverage starts immediately.
Step 7: Clean Up
We remove all packaging, old equipment, and debris. We vacuum or sweep any dust created during installation. When we leave, the only evidence of our visit is your new, quietly humming AC system.
After Installation: Your Maintenance Schedule
A properly maintained AC system lasts 15-20 years. We recommend annual tune-ups before each cooling season (ideally March-April in North Texas) to keep your system running at peak efficiency. Ask about our Season Ticket Maintenance Plan for priority scheduling, discounted repairs, and two annual tune-ups.
