UV Light Air Purification Systems in Frisco, TX

There's a reason hospitals, laboratories, and water treatment plants use ultraviolet light to kill pathogens — it works. UV-C light, specifically the 254-nanometer wavelength, destroys the DNA of bacteria, viruses, mold spores, and other microorganisms on contact. When installed inside your HVAC system, a UV light unit treats every cubic foot of air that passes through your ductwork, neutralizing biological contaminants before they reach your living spaces.

Varsity Zone HVAC installs whole-home UV light purification systems designed to integrate directly with your existing heating and cooling equipment. There's nothing to plug in, no filters to change, and no room-by-room air purifiers to manage. It works silently inside your system, 24 hours a day.

How UV Light Purification Works in Your HVAC System

We install the UV-C lamp inside your air handler or ductwork, positioned where it can irradiate air as it passes through the system. The most common placement is near the evaporator coil — that's the indoor component that gets cold and wet during cooling, making it a natural breeding ground for mold and bacteria if left untreated.

As your system circulates air through the home, every pass exposes airborne contaminants to the UV-C light. Single-pass kill rates depend on the organism and exposure time, but with multiple air cycles per hour (your system typically circulates all the air in your home 5-7 times per day), cumulative effectiveness is extremely high.

The UV lamp also keeps the evaporator coil itself clean. Mold growth on the coil is one of the most common causes of musty AC smells — that "dirty sock" odor that some homeowners notice when the system first kicks on. A UV light eliminates the mold colony at the source.

What UV Light Systems Eliminate

  • Mold and mildew spores: The number one biological air quality issue in Texas homes. Mold thrives in the dark, humid environment inside your air handler. UV light kills it before it can colonize and spread spores through your ductwork.
  • Bacteria: Including common household bacteria that cause illness. UV-C is effective against E. coli, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, and many other bacterial strains.
  • Viruses: UV-C has been shown to neutralize influenza, common cold viruses, and many other airborne viral pathogens. During cold and flu season, a UV system adds a meaningful layer of protection.
  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs): Some UV systems, particularly those with photocatalytic oxidation technology, can break down chemical vapors from cleaning products, paint, adhesives, and building materials.

What UV Light Does Not Do

We believe in being straight with our customers. UV light systems are excellent at killing biological contaminants, but they don't remove particles from the air. Dust, pet dander, pollen — those physical particles pass through UV light unaffected. For particle removal, you need filtration or an electronic air cleaner, which is why we often recommend combining UV purification with an upgraded filter or electronic system for comprehensive air quality improvement.

Installation and Maintenance

Installation takes about 1-2 hours and is minimally invasive. We mount the UV lamp inside your existing air handler — no ductwork modifications required. The lamp runs continuously and draws very little electricity (roughly the same as a standard light bulb).

The UV-C bulb needs replacement approximately once per year. The bulb continues to produce light beyond 12 months, but its germicidal effectiveness diminishes over time as the UV-C output drops below the threshold needed for reliable pathogen kill. We can include bulb replacement in your annual maintenance visit to keep things simple.

Cost and Value

A whole-home UV light purification system typically costs $400-$1,200 installed, depending on the type of system and your HVAC configuration. Annual bulb replacement runs $80-$150. Compared to the cost of room-by-room portable air purifiers (which don't treat your entire home and require their own filter replacements), a whole-home UV system is both more effective and more economical over time.

For homeowners dealing with recurring mold issues, musty AC smells, or family members with compromised immune systems, UV purification is one of the highest-value air quality investments you can make.
